Will The Next Pope Be The Last?

The Roman Catholic Church has taken no official position on the Prophecy of the Popes, commonly attributed to Saint Malachy, the 12th century Bishop of Armagh in Ireland, but the announcement of the retirement of Pope Benedict XVI will certainly fuel speculation and a renewed interest in Malachy, as the reign of the next pope is said to signal the end-times...

According to tradition, Malachy, who was reputed to have the gift of prophesy, experienced a vision of all the future popes of the Roman Catholic Church shortly after he was summoned to Rome by Pope Innocent II in 1139.

It is reputed that Malachy listed the popes using descriptive, yet cryptic, mottos to describe each, and allegedly submitted the list to Innocent II.

The list surfaced in 1595 as part of a work, Lignum Vitae, published by Arnold de Wyon, a Benedictine historian.

Due, in part, to the lack of any other conclusive evidence, beyond the attribution by de Wyon some 400 years later, that the list can actually be attributed to Malachy, the Church has taken no official position on the authenticity or the prophetic accuracy of the list.

Moreover, some Church scholars believe that the list is a forgery, and some have gone so far as to assert that de Wyon (or subsequent transcribers) may have published the list and attributed it to Malachy to influence the selection of the next pope.

Others, however, contend that the descriptions given to the popes are uncannily accurate, and further claim that the fact that the last pope listed comes after Benedict XVI is a clear indication that we are in the end-times.

We offer no opinion on the matter but you can find below the mottos attributed to the last four popes and the pope-to-come as well as commentaries taken from Peter Bander's book: The Prophecies of St Malachy.

Paul VI (1963-1978): Flos florum (Flower of Flowers) - His arms displayed three lilies.

John Paul I (1978): De medietate Lunæ (Of the Half of the Moon) - Albino Luciani, born in Canale d'Agardo, diocese of Belluno, (beautiful moon) Elected pope on August 26, his reign lasted about a month, from half a moon to the next half...

John Paul II (1978-2005): De labore Solis (Of the Eclipse of the Sun, or from the Labor of the Sun) - Karol Wojtyla was born on May 18, 1920 during a solar eclipse. He also comes from behind the former Iron Curtain (the East, where the Sun rises). He might also be seen to be the fruit of the intercession of the Woman Clothed with the Sun labouring in Revelation 12 (because of his devotion to the Virgin Mary). His Funeral occurred on 8 April, 2005 when there was a solar eclipse visible in the Americas.

Benedict XVI (2005-): (Gloria Olivae) - The Benedictine order traditionally said this Pope would come from their order, since a branch of the Benedictine order is called the Olivetans. St Benedict is said to have prophesied that before the end of the world, a member of his order would be Pope and would triumphantly lead the Church in its fight against evil. While the Holy Father chose the name "Benedict", this does not seem enough to fulfil the prophecy. Nor is it clear how Benedict XVI (a Bavarian) is "Glory of the Olives". Since he is said to have remarked in the Conclave after saying he would take the name Benedict that it was partly to honour Benedict XV, a pope of peace and reconciliation, perhaps Benedict XVI will be a peacemaker in the Church or in the World, and thus carry the olive branch.

Peter of Rome: (In persecutione extrema S.R.E. sedebit Petrus Romanus, qui pascet oves in multis tribulationibus: quibus transactis civitas septicollis diruetur, & Judex tremêdus judicabit populum suum. Finis.) - In extreme persecution, the seat of the Holy Roman Church will be occupied by Peter the Roman, who will feed the sheep through many tribulations, at the term of which the city of seven hills will be destroyed, and the formidable Judge will judge his people. The End.

Coincidentally (or perhaps not so coincidentally) one of the early "front-runners" to replace Pope Benedict XVI is Cardinal Peter Kodwo Appiah Turkson of Ghana.
