The ObamaCare Food Police Are On The March
Since few in Washington are brave enough to ask the question, we'll ask. How
long will it take the FDA to transition from mandating that restaurants post
nutrition and calorie information to mandating exactly what we eat? And lest you
believe we exaggerate, consider the words of the brainchild of this provision,
Senator Tom Harkin: "The individual and societal costs of poor nutrition
and diet-related chronic disease compel us to take concrete steps to fashion a
society in which the healthy choice is the easy choice."

(Washington Times) Signed by President Obama, the overall plan is the brainchild of senators including Tom Harkin, the Iowa Democrat who added Section 4205 to ObamaCare. In his ever-folksy way, Mr. Harkin explained: "The individual and societal costs of poor nutrition and diet-related chronic disease compel us to take concrete steps to fashion a society in which the healthy choice is the easy choice."
The language also lets the FDA meddle with other popular specialties, requiring the postings of "the nutrient content for standard menu items that come in different flavors, varieties, or combinations, but which are listed as a single menu item, such as soft drinks, ice cream, pizza, doughnuts, or children's combination meals."
What difference will it make? The Food Marketing Institute predicts costs to the grocery industry of $1 billion in the first year alone. The FDA claims costs would be a third of that, but regardless the cost, it can't describe any benefits. Its cost- benefit report states: "FDA has not estimated the actual benefits associated with proposed requirements. Food choice and consumption decisions are complex, and FDA is unaware of any comprehensive data allowing accurate predictions."

ReplyDeleteThe very first thing that should be done is NOT to give welfare dollars to the welfare recipients! Give them food! Like beans, rice, staples for them to cook. Then you will reduce the quantity of obese people. They don't work so they don't eat right. Give them the basic staples and also cooking lessons! I understand that the democrats are so worried that we will hurt their pride, but anyone that takes doles, don't have any pride to hurt. When food, etc. are needed, pride is not the issue!
