According to its own rules, the House elects its Speaker when
one candidate has the votes of a majority of the entire membership of the House.
Put another way, it takes 218 votes to be elected Speaker of the House and John
Boehner only received 220 votes on Thursday.
But there's much more to this story.
Matthew Boyle with Breitbart.com reported on Wednesday: "Outgoing Louisiana
Republican Rep. Jeff Landry told Breitbart News there are at least 17 GOP
members who plan to unseat House Speaker John Boehner on Thursday, and Boehner
may resign on Wednesday evening during or after a GOP caucus meeting."
Boyle further reported: "Landry said another member organizing the effort told
him they’ve got at least 17 – which is the bare minimum needed to unseat
Boehner. “They’re somewhere between 17 and 20,” Landry said in a phone
interview. "I think they’re trying to get to 25.'"
One doesn't need to be a fly on the wall or have access to insider information
to figure out what happened. Clearly Boehner scrambled to make some last-minute
deals and concessions to save his bacon.
Such a theory is bolstered by Boehner's sudden and unexpected declaration on
Wednesday that he would no longer meet with Barack Obama behind closed doors and
allow the legislative process to proceed through regular order, as well as the
sudden decision to oppose the a pork-laden bill that was being deceptively sold
to the American public as an effort to provide relief to victims of Hurricane
Sandy.
Such expected occurrences were clearly public concessions that were designed to
convince some House Republicans who had abandoned Boehner to give him just one
more chance. Whether or not Boehner will keep what promises he may have made and
unapologetically stand up in opposition to the radical Obama agenda, remains to
be seen.
In the weeks leading up to the vote, GrassTopsUSA members and supporters
generated 54,883 faxes to Congress (6,382 of those were sent in the hours prior
to the vote) urging elected officials to unseat Speaker Boehner.
GrassTopsUSA Executive Director Christopher Carmouche stated: "The American
people sent a very clear message that they want a Speaker of the House that will
oppose and not accommodate the radical Obama agenda and Thursday's vote is an
affirmation that our elected officials got that message loud and clear."
