James Holmes sits in a cell in the Arapahoe County House of Detention, with
hair to match his jump-suit. On Monday, Holmes was charged with 24 counts of
first-degree murder (two for each of his victims) and 116 counts of attempted
murder for those he wounded or tried to kill.
The Aurora, Colorado tragedy has become the latest excuse for the left to bleat
for more restrictions on gun owners – a ban on so-called assault weapons
(liberals are great at devising scary names that have nothing to do with a
weapon’s function) or a limitation on magazine size.

Assault Weapon
ReplyDeleteAn automatic or semiautomatic weapon that holds 30 or more rounds of ammunition and which is generally understood to fire one bullet each time the trigger is pulled. There is no technical military definition of assault weapon other than that referring to a weapon used in a military assault operation. The US Army does define the term assault rifle as a short, compact, selective-fire weapon that fires a cartridge intermediate in power between submachine gun and rifle cartridges

Accept it that this type of rifle is not meant to kill deer or squirrels or to be used to protect a home from a burglar climbing through a window. What type weapon would you recommend to be used inside a crowded theater? A rifle that can fire 10 rounds or a rifle with a large magazine that can fire 30 rounds? If you have 100 heavily armed troops from another country coming toward you, an assault rifle with a 30 round magazine would be appropriate. How many weapons were in the Sikh temple or in the theater? Were the gunmen threatened by the Sikhs or the theater patrons? The Republican party is controlled by the NRA, so there will never be any sensible gun legislation, even about limiting assault rifles or large magazines. Republicans are shaking in their boots about the NRA's influence - and I assume the writer is a Republican.
