TEA Party Activists Formally Reject GOP

(Washington Examiner) A group of self-identified conservatives in the political bellwether state of Ohio said Thursday it is parting ways with the Republican Party because of recent events, including U.S. Sen. Rob Portman's policy shift in favor of same-sex marriage.

 

A letter joined by more than 80 mostly tea party activists, as well as former state legislators and anti-abortion advocates, also cited as reasons Republican Gov. John Kasich's support for Medicaid expansion under President Barack Obama's federal health care law and the fact the party's chairman-in-waiting, Matt Borges, was convicted in 2004 of misdemeanor misuse of public office.

"With this letter we put the party bosses on notice that we reject their betrayal of the party platform and our conservative values," said Tom Zawistowski, director of the Portage County Tea Party. "We will not support them going forward but will instead support those who are true to our cause."
